Are windows installed from the inside or the outside?

March 9, 2023

Getting new windows is a fantastic way of giving your home a brand new look without costing the earth.

One of the most common questions we come across when people are weighing up their options is, ‘Are windows installed from the inside or the outside?’

Windows can actually be installed both from the inside and the outside. But commonly, professional installers will fit them from the outside. The main reason being it can minimise mess and disruption to the property, and also allows the installer to properly seal and weatherproof the frame.

You’re getting new windows fitted on your home, it’s common to want to know whether windows are installed from the inside or outside.

Replacing your windows can be a messy job, and then you might have cold and wet weather to contend with.

Windows can be installed both from the inside and the outside. But commonly, professional installers will fit your windows from the outside. This can minimise mess and disruption to your home and allows the installer to properly seal and weatherproof the frame and prevent any leaks.

The window replacement process – How it (usually) works

  • Choose your ideal replacement windows: First, you will need to think about the style, size, energy efficiency rating, and material your new windows are made of. It’s important to check your local building regulation codes, especially if you live in a conservation area or listed building.

  • Measure your existing windows: If you want a proper fit, you need to take accurate measurements. A professional installer can measure up the width, height and depth of your existing frames to ensure you get it right.

  • Prepare the area: Free and unfettered access to the space around the window is needed, inside and outside. This means removing any blinds, curtains, furniture or ornaments inside your home, and any garden furniture outside the window.

  • Remove the old window: To begin with, any window openings are unscrewed at the hinges. The beading and putty are then removed before the window panes are taken out. Finally, the frame is taken out with a pry bar and hammer.

  • Clean and prepare the opening: Debris and old caulking must be removed, and the window opening should be cleaned. It’s important to check for rot or see if any repairs to the area are needed.

  • Install the new window: The new window will be lifted into place from the outside, and adjusted, so it is level and plumb. It is then secured in place, and insulation is added around the frame.

  • Trim and seal the window: The window trim or casing is installed around the frame. Any gaps or joints are sealed with caulking to avoid any leaks and ensure good energy efficiency.

  • Test the window: Finally, it’s important to test the weatherstripping, and ensure any hinges or locks operate smoothly and securely.

Are windows ever completely installed from the inside?

Windows are typically installed from the outside due to ease of  access, and the fact there’s likely to be less mess made inside the property.

However, there are situations where windows can be installed from the inside, too.

High-rise buildings, blocks of flats, buildings where the outside is inaccessible, or historic properties where the exterior facade cannot be altered, are all cases where windows need to be installed from the inside.

If the existing window frames are staying in situ, replacement window frames can be inserted from the inside.

However, it’s worth noting that installing windows from the inside can be more challenging because you need precise measurements, careful insulation, and a proper seal. Always consult with a professional installer to determine the best installation method for your home.

Choosing the right window installer

If you want to ensure the replacing of your windows is a smooth and stress-free process, it’s worth choosing a professional window installer with a strong reputation for quality.

We would always recommend considering these important factors when selecting a installer for your project:

  • Experience: A professional installer should have a proven track record of quality workmanship. You can check online reviews and see what customers say, or even ask for references.

  • Certification and licensing: Make sure your chosen installer is fully certified and licenced, so you can be confident they meet industry standards, and their work will comply with local regulations.

  • Warranty: Find out if your installer offers a warranty or guarantees on their workmanship. It will give you peace of mind knowing you are protected from any potential defects or issues.

  • Communication: It’s important that your chosen installer communicates clearly and consistently throughout the process, and is prepared to answer all of your questions.

  • Price: While cost is an important factor, it should not be the sole determining one. Look for an installer who offers a fair price for quality workmanship and reliable service.

Always look at credentials, examine reviews, check for liability insurance, compare costs closely, and avoid any contractors without insurance.

When you choose the right installer for the job, you can relax, safe in the knowledge you will be receiving the highest quality workmanship.
