Case Study: Hatcham College, Lewisham
The window replacement project was managed by Arcadis Consulting and fitted by The Window Company. Parts of the building, including the hall, date back to 1890, so this was a project where the windows and doors had to match perfectly with the age and character of the building.
Over 40 Vertical Sliders and Tilt and Slide windows with Astragal bars were installed which matched the external appearance of the timber they were replacing.
Mary Williams, Business Manager at the school, said: ‘We are delighted with the products, particularly the new Sash windows and with the attention to detail the fitters showed on every aspect of the project.’

Case Study: Siemens offices, Congleton
A comprehensive interior and exterior refurbishment contract was carried out on the Cheshire premises of a Blue Chip electronics company. This included the selection of high performance windows from the range of profiles offered by VEKA plc.
With the Chester office of Powell Williams LLP being the client’s chosen architectural consultant, the work at Siemens’ Congleton site has been led by main contractor, Brown and Bancroft. Meanwhile, D and M Windows and Doors was the member of VEKA’s wide fabricator network responsible for supplying and installing some 300 VEKA M70 Casement windows, as well as doors and flashings to complete the façade facelift.
With the four storey structure standing in an exposed location, wind loadings were also an important factor. Following the provision of wind calculations and evidence of the window system’s test performance, the frames were coupled together in banks of five to provide enhanced resistance to the predicted wind speeds.
D and M Windows and Doors is now putting forward a tender to carry out the next phase of work at the site.

Case Study: Wirral Grammar School for Boys
Following a successful bid to the Education and Skills Funding Agency Condition Improvement Fund, a prestigious grammar school is reaping the aesthetic and practical benefits of VEKA’s Matrix 70 windows, which have been installed throughout the 85-year-old building. The windows are PAS 24 and Secured by Design compliant and able to achieve U-values as low as 0.8 – combining security and thermal comfort, with pleasing aesthetics.
When Wirral Grammar School for Boys needed to modernise the windows on the main school building, which was built in 1931, they were faced with the task of finding windows to suit the architecture, as well as help to standardise the temperature throughout the school and classrooms. VEKA stepped up to the challenge, working with the architect and surveyor Arcadis to specify over 200 windows, which were then fabricated by Glazerite UK Group.
VEKA’s Matrix 70 windows, manufactured from PVC-U, helped to keep the design as close as possible to the original Georgian bar windows, while improving heat retention. The windows now also push out, instead of inwards as they did previously, allowing for improved ventilation throughout the rooms of the school.

VEKA plc systems are designed to achieve the best energy ratings they can but this depends on the overall specification and the requirements or capabilities of the installation. Outer frame size, reinforcing specification & glass type all affect the overall U value & energy ratings. On the other hand it may not always be beneficial to specify the highest rating as it may exceed the capabilities of the property or be in a location where no benefit is gained.
